Conflict styles unpacked

When conflict arises in the workplace, we can either choose a path of destruction or productivity. I use the term ‘choose’ lightly as it is rare (without some form of coaching) for behavioural insights to appear in that moment of conflict.

When conflict arises, often people do not stop in that split second to question which response will land destructively or productively. In fact, as humans, we are heavily steeped in pre-conditioned behaviours or tendencies that work as automatic responses. Some of these can be defensive reactions which can be counter-productive in the face of adversity. Some of our natural behaviours can also come across as either combative or collaborative.

From arguing to stonewalling, from sarcasm to withdrawing there are many responses to conflict, and these can be recurring traits of four observable behaviour types. The trick is in acquiring the skills to turn an automatic thought into a reframed one. The tools and frameworks that are built for permanency are offered in coaching. These support businesses that not only want strategic alignment but also leadership effectiveness. A bi-product of this can be improved communication.
